Volunteer Program 2017 Data
Christmas Tree, Christmas Lights and Styrofoam Recycling: Held at the Centralia
Transfer Station from 26 Dec 2017 — 10 Jan 2018 (16-day environmental outreach
project). 87 WSU MG and MRC volunteers contributed 252 hours collecting
approximately 960 trees from 883 people. These 21.12 tons of trees will be
chipped and redistributed to Borst Demonstration Garden for public use. The
remainder will be delivered to Centralia Waste Water Treatment facility for use in
the bio-solids composting project. A portion of this bio-solid compost is made
available to the public at no charge at the Borst Demonstration Garden with the
remainder made available for purchase at the treatment facility.
An estimated 570 lbs. of block Styrofoam was collected for recycling, and
delivered to DART Container Corp. in Tumwater, where it will be processed into
picture frames, crown molding and office supplies.
An estimated of 400 lbs. of Christmas lights were accepted for recycling and
reuse.
Program Support: 5707 hours
Continuing Education: 2232 hours
Special Projects: 145 hours
Our electronic list serve reaches out to over 3,000 people throughout Lewis
County (which is continuous growing) informing them about all the free
workshops that are provided to the community on gardening, recycling and
composting, and food preservation.
The number of items collected had a huge impact in minimizing the amounts of
waste going to our landfill and protection of our environment.
