PROCLAIMING OCTOBER 2018 AS
LEWIS COUNTY DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
& LEWIS COUNTY ALERT AWARENESS MONTH
LEWIS COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
WHEREAS, Lewis County has experienced natural and technological disasters in the past and remains vulnerable
in the future;and
WHEREAS,everyone in the county should prepare themselves to be as self-sufficient as possible for at least two
weeks following an act of terrorism,a natural disaster or a technological disaster;and
WHEREAS,advance preparation, planning and training reduces incident recovery time, mitigates risk and saves
lives. Every hour spent on preparation saves nine hours in the recovery process;and
WHEREAS,proclaiming October as Lewis County Disaster Preparedness&Lewis County Alert Awareness Month
will bring a heightened awareness and encourage residents, businesses and local governments to prepare
themselves in an "all hazards manner"to be self-sufficient and knowledgeable about the risks we face;and
WHEREAS,the loss of both life and property can be greatly reduced if the citizens have available information
provided over the NOAA Weather Radio and Lewis County Alert systems;and
WHEREAS,by participating in the statewide"Drop,Cover and Hold"earthquake drill at 10:18 a.m.on October 18,
2018,individuals,neighborhoods,schools, businesses and organizations will have taken steps to prepare before
disaster strikes,thereby saving lives,reducing injuries, mitigating loss to property and speeding up the recovery
process;
NOW THEREFORE we,the members of the Lewis County Board of County Commissioners,do hereby proclaim
October as Lewis County Disaster Preparedness&Lewis County Alert Awareness Month in Lewis County and
encourage all citizens to increase their self-sustainability during emergency situations along with developing
increased awareness of the emergency alert systems within Lewis County.

Description
Advance preparation, planning, and training reduces incident recovery time, mitigates risk and saves lives.
Every hour spent on preparation saves nine hours in the recovery process. The Lewis County Division of
Emergency Management, in cooperation with Washington State Emergency Management and other emergency
management professionals across the state, encourage individuals, neighborhoods, schools, businesses and
government organizations to plan and prepare for emergencies and disasters.
By proclaiming October as "Lewis County Disaster Preparedness &Lewis County Alert Awareness Month," the
BOCC is encouraging all people, business and organizations to be self sufficient for at least two weeks during
disasters.The BOCC is also encouraging awareness of the Lewis County Alert notification system that includes
NOAA Weather Radio and Lewis County Alert along with participation in the State-wide "Drop, Cover, &
Hold" earthquake drill at 10:18 a.m. Oct. 18, 2018.
