2019-05-29 Meeting to discuss WATVsMeeting to discuss WATVs
May 29, 2019
4:04 p.m.
Present: Commissioner Jackson, Commissioner Stamper, Commissioner Fund, County Manager Erik
Martin, Josh Metcalf, Wayne Whiton
Recorder: Rieva Lester
Josh Metcalf said he has asked for average daily traffic data
(ADT) for county roads on the west end of the county that
would meet the current ordinance’s criteria for WATV use.
He said Public Works suggests determining whether the roads
tie into a cities or towns that allow WATV use and whether
there is Sheriff’s Office activity on the roads. He said Public
Works would advise against allowing WATV use on Cook’s Hill
Road and Curtis Hill Road, among others.
Josh said the county could look at roads as individuals request
that the county do so or look at roads as cities and towns pass
legislation allowing for WATV use rather than give a blanket approval.
The group discussed reaching out to surrounding cities and towns to gauge their interest in allowing
WATV use. Commissioner Fund noted that Centralia does not allow WATV use.
Josh said he’s asked the Sheriff’s Office to identify roads that have consistent problems with speeding,
accidents, etc., so that WATV use wouldn’t be added to the mix.
The commissioners said they would ask like to attend upcoming city and town council meetings to
discuss the topic with representatives for those areas.
Josh said traffic volume likely would eliminate many of the roads that would meet the roads that would
meet the current ordinance’s criteria for WATV use.
The commissioners said they would add it as a topic for the June Mayors’ Meeting.
Josh said he would create a map detailing possible routes and would be willing to attend the city council
and town council meetings with the commissioners.
Erik Martin left at 4:27 p.m.
Josh noted that Weyerhaeuser no longer allows public access to its lands.
Commissioner Stamper suggested looking at Long Bell Road.
Meeting adjourned at 4:50 p.m.
