L E W I S C O U N T Y B O A R D O F COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
WHEREAS, Matilda (Glover) Koontz Jackson was a mother of four young boys , .�
when she set out across the Oregon Trail in 1847 with her husband, and V ;,
WHEREAS, Matilda watched her husband drown while attempting to cross
the Snake River and then suffered a miscarriage the next day;and
WHEREAS, despite her heartbreak, Matilda continued the journey west;and
WHEREAS, Matilda eventually remarried,settling at Highland Farm; and
WHEREAS, Matilda entertained many visitors to the area, and her hospitality
impressed countless guests, including Washington's first Territorial Governor,
Isaac Stevens, and his family, as well three soldiers who would later become generals(and one the
president of the United States) Ulysses S Grant, George B McClellan and Philip Sheridan,and
WHEREAS, Matilda's kindness and perseverance helped shape the Washington Territory.
NOW THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED that today we proclaim October 26, 2019, as Matilda Jackson Legacy
Day to honor this resilient pioneer woman and first lady of Lewis County
Done in open session this 21st day of October 2019
