2018-01-09 Update with BudgetUpdate with Budget January 9, 2018 3:51 p.m. Present: Commissioner Fund, Commissioner Jackson, Commissioner Stamper, Becky Butler, Steve Walton Recorder: Rieva Lester Becky said Erik Martin has indicated he is putting safeguards in place to avoid future budget shortfalls. Becky said the debt service fund had a Treasurer’s fee of $300. She said budgets for senior services, fair, animal shelter, the Sheriff’s Office and the jail are close. Becky said she has learned of six or seven retirements that will take place in 2018. She said one department has four individuals who will be leaving. She said there will be savings, but there also will be bigger payouts. Becky suggested amortizing the payouts. She asked that the commissioners reiterate that message during ESC. Becky said 2019 planning will start in March. The commissioners said they would like to again include a citizens’ panel and hold all-day meetings. Becky suggested the possible use of alternative budget dates, which would be set by resolution. The group discussed committing three to four days to all-day Budget meetings and setting aside two days during which follow-up meetings could take place. Becky discussed the push for Secure Rural Schools funding as well as a DEM position that had been frozen and that would return. She said half of the funding for the position would be paid through communications. Commissioner Jackson left at 4:04 p.m. Meeting adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
