Mary Kay Nelson, Tamara Hayes and Daniel Moore discussed the need to have a united front – and
grant funding – to draw tourists to the area and embrace and encourage outdoor recreation.
Participants introduced themselves and discussed their goals.
The group discussed efforts already taking place as well as ways in which to improve, including looking
at what neighboring communities are doing.
Commissioner Jackson left at 2:11 p.m.
The group reviewed the steps they would need to follow:
• Create a plan for outdoor recreation
o Master plan for trails
o Development of new sites
o Address regulatory matters
o Seek support for businesses
• Establish a group to carry out and oversee the plan
o Include representatives for stakeholders
o Determine group’s authority
o Tie in with the state and region
Dan said the group should be sure to include businesses, nonprofits and governmental representatives.
Members of the group brainstormed ideas about who should be involved and what power they should
wield.
The group discussed how to create an advisory group:
• Include the Board of County Commissioners, possibly in quarterly meetings
• Invite / inform the media
• Include representatives from other groups and make efforts to tie everyone together
• Hire a coordinator – and possibly seek grant funding to do so
• Identify a vision and program
• Define the group’s purpose
The group discussed having the commissioners appoint members to the advisory group. Commissioner
Fund discussed reviewing the model Pierce County followed.
The group discussed meeting again in the future before presenting a more formalized plan to the Lewis
County Board of County Commissioners.
Meeting adjourned at 2:57 a.m.
