PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Please provide a detailed description of the proposed project/activity.Your description
must include the following:
1. Describe how the project promotes tourism in all of Lewis County's unincorporated areas.
The Packwood Visitor Center has and shares promotional materials for all over Lewis County. We work
with Discover Lewis County, The White Pass Scenic Byway, Mount Rainier National Park, White Pass
Ski Area and more. The Visitor's Center Volunteer Board continues to be involved in Mayor's Meetings,
BOCC, East Lewis County Chamber and various networking opportunities.
2. Describe how the project will enhance tourism and result in "heads in beds."
The Visitor Center is solely in place to enhance tourism. The staff promotes activities, business, lodging
and events in Packwood and Lewis County at large. This is accomplished by direct contact, web and
media promotions and information sharing.
3. List the responsible party/parties.
The White Pass Country Historical Society Board and officers in cooperation with the Visitor Center
Board, officers and volunteers.
PROJECT NAME: Packwood Visitor Center 3
4. Describe how the area the project will serve,as well as the project's
expected impact.
Packwood is a year-round outdoor activity community with hiking, biking, hunting, fishing and foraging in
the spring and summer; hunting, fishing, skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling activities in the winter.
By having a Visitor Center open consistently, we can better tourists as they travel to and through our
area.
5. Describe how the project will specifically promote tourism.
Tourists stop at the Visitor Center year-round for help in finding appropriate trails, water activities,
lodging, and more.Visitors looking for what to do and where to go can find information on our website
and social media posts as well.
6. Describe how you have collaborated with other entities throughout Lewis County
to promote tourism.
We collaborate with local organizations, including the Packwood Improvement Club, area churches,
hiking and trail groups, mountain biking and motorcycle groups, the Sports Car Club of America, the
Anderson Field Fly-In, and more. Countywide,we work and collaborate with Discover Lewis County, The

7. Describe why your project should receive funding.
We have been reviewed and lauded as a model example of a successful Visitor Center.
USE OF HOTEL/MOTEL TAX

❑DIRECTIONAL SIGNAGE
8. Describe the expected results (measurable outcomes) of your project, with the
dollar amount for each outcome.
The projected visitor count in 2020 is approximately 20,000. On average an overnight tourist will buy
breakfast, 2 lunches, and 2 dinners that, with the cost of lodging, will have each tourist spend
approximately $205 in Packwood. There will be additional monies left in Lewis County as those tourists
travel down 12, and onto 1-5.
PROJECT NAME: Packwood Visitor Center ?
9. Please provide attendance information regarding each of the following:
A. Overall attendance
a. Total number of attendees predicted to attend: 20,000
b. Describe how receiving lodging tax dollars would increase that number
Lodging tax dollars allow for the operational costs it takes to service almost 20,000 visitors. Having direct
contact with this amount of tourists is invaluable, and even if a modest 25% make a return visit to Lewis
County after receiving information on activities, the return is worthwhile
• B. Participants traveling fifty(50)miles or more
a. Projected number of attendees who will travel fifty(50)miles or more one
way from their home or business to attend: 20,000
b. Describe how receiving lodging tax dollars would increase that number
Almost all of our visitors have traveled more than 50 miles because of our remote location.
tie
C. Participants traveling from another state or country
a. Projected number of participants who will travel from another country or
state to attend: 5,000
b. Describe how receiving lodging tax dollars would increase that number
Our website and social media presence will keep Packwood in the forefront of travelers looking at the
area. Mount Rainier National Park is also increasing their partnership efforts with gateway communities
and will be looking to us to help them promote our area to draw people away from the overcrowded
Nisqually entrance.
PROJECT NAME: Packwood Visitor Center
D. Participants staying overnight in paid accommodations 11110)
a. Projected number of participants who will stay overnight in paid
accommodations: 10,000
b. Describe how receiving lodging tax dollars would increase that number
Lodging tax dollars keep the Visitors' Center fully staffed to help find and book lodging. Approximately
50% of visitors that come into the center have spent the night in paid accommodations.Visitors that are
just driving through or visiting for a day are encouraged and information is shared with them on lodging
available for their next trip to the mountain and Packwood.
E. Participants staying overnight in unpaid accommodations
a. Projected number of participants who will stay overnight in unpaid
accommodations: 4,500
b. Describe how receiving lodging tax dollars would increase that number
Visitors are all encouraged to stay in available lodging for their next available visit
10. Describe how the project provides short-term or long-term economic benefit for
Lewis County.
Short term economic benefits for Lewis County are realized in the increased traffic from the east and west
on US Highway 12. Increased need for rest stops, fuel, meals, etc are a given with the distance of
Packwood from Yakima, Chehalis, Tacoma, Seattle, Portland and beyond.
Long term economic benefits for Lewis County include increased awareness of all that Lewis County has
to offer throughout the year and reasons to plan a next trip. The Visitor Center represents all of Lewis
County.
11. Explain what plans exist to allow this project to become self-sustaining. Include
any plans for ticket sales, event sponsors, and other cost-recovery models.
The Visitor Center is not a revenue making venture. It was never set up to be self-sustaining. The entire
county benefits form the Packwood Visitor Center with skilled and informed staff to help plan trips,
suggest lodging and share information on county-wide events and activities

The Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC) may recommend awarding partial funding.
Please indicate your priorities below:
Priority 1 Full Funding Request $68,280.00
Priority 2 Minimum Funding Request $65,000.00
Applicant will/can accept no less than this amount $65,000.00
If partial funding is received, how will that affect the project/activity? Please describe:
Most of our request is labor cost. This is a no-frills ask. Partial funding will mean decreased tourist contact.
Note that this is a one-year submission due to a working agreement between the White Pass Country Historical
Society and the Destination Packwood Association Board. The goal is for the Visitor Center to continue to
operate for the benefit of the community and county while DPA resolves the issue under investigation.
PROJECT TIMELINE/TOURISM SEASON
What is your anticipated timeline for accomplishing this activity?
We anticipate having the visitor center open 7 days a week and closed only on major holidays. This is a
year-round effort to increase tourism county-wide.
