Chief Breen gave an update on Services bureau, including:
• Response to recent bomb threat
• FAA certification for drone use – two detectives
• Personal property auction – planned for Jan. 17
• Staffing
County Manager Erik Martin joined at 10:07 a.m.
Chief Breen said new background check rules related to I-1639 resulted in an additional 600 background
checks for the year. He said the work associated with the additional requirements cost the county
roughly $36,000.
Commissioner Stamper joined at 10:11 a.m.
Undersheriff Wes Rethwill gave an update on Corrections and Operations, including:
• Staffing
• Jail contracts revenue -- $1 million for 2019
• Repairs needed for jail elevator
• Bomb threat “all call”
• Leaks
• Body scanner – future purchase
Undersheriff Rethwill provided Operations stats for 2019, including:
• 7,000 traffic stops
• 650 criminal citations
• 119 DUIs
Undersheriff Rethwill said the county collected 1,200 pounds of medication in its drug take-back boxes
in 2019.
Undersheriff Rethwill gave updates on staffing and training as well as upcoming events, including:
• WASPC Firearms System Replacement & SECTOR Replacement project groups
• Coffee With Cops
• Napavine, Firearms Safety Class
• Young Marines
• 2020 Leg Day
• WTSC Traffic Safety Equipment Grant Selection Committee
• LCSO Annual Meeting – Bethel, Contract Negotiations
• Corrections Sergeants/Deputies
The Sheriff’s Office praised Daleyn Coleman, Steve Walton and the commissioners for their work to
wrap up labor agreements.
Sheriff Snaza praised the efforts of George and Elaine Chandler – and the commissioners – for their
efforts to recognize law enforcement. Sheriff Snaza discussed the Community Care fund.
Sheriff Snaza praised Public Works for its work in response to flooding and snow.
Sheriff Snaza discussed WAC 139-12 (Law Enforcement Training and Community Safety Act –
Independent Investigations Criteria), which was created in response to the passage of I-940. He said he
is working with the PA’s Office to discuss response to area cities, noting that there are costs associated
with response to cities.
Sheriff Snaza discussed:
• The need for low-barrier housing options.
• Work to help in mental health crisis situations.
• Work his office will be doing to be proactive about budget needs.
