Proclamation recognizing May 2020 as Drug Court Month PROCLAIMING MAY 2020 AS DRUG COURT MONTH LEWIS COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WHEREAS, this year marks the 16th anniversary of Lewis County's Drug Court program (and the 31st anniversary of treatment courts nationwide); and WHEREAS, more than 212 local residents have graduated from Lewis County Drug Court since 2005; and WHEREAS, 85 percent of Lewis County's Drug Court graduates are not convicted of new crimes after completing the program; and WHEREAS, the nation's 3,000-plus drug courts have served more than 1.5 million individuals and save up to$27 for each dollar invested, producing an average savings of roughly $6,000 per individual served; and WHEREAS, drug courts are recognized as the most successful criminal justice intervention in U.S. history, reducing crime and significantly improving the outcomes of substance-abuse treatment at far less expense than any other criminal justice strategy; and WHEREAS, drug courts help promote education, increase employment, boost housing and financial stability, promote family reunification, reduce the number of foster home placements, and improve statistics related to addicted expectant mothers; and WHEREAS, drug courts facilitate communitywide partnerships, bringing public safety and public health professionals together in the fight against addiction and crime; and WHEREAS, drug courts demonstrate that when one person rises out of addiction and crime, we all rise; NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that May 2020 is hereby proclaimed Drug Court Month in Lewis County.
