LEWIS COUNTY, WASHINGTON
IN THE MATTER OF: RESOLUTION NO. 21-173
MODIFY RESTRICTIONS ON OUTDOOR BURNING
TO ALLOW PERMITTED BURNING THROUGHOUT
LANDS REGULATED BY LEWIS COUNTY
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) concurs with the decision
of the Lewis County Fire Marshal and Lewis County Fire Chiefs Association that
weather conditions have improved to allow open burning by permit on all
unincorporated lands regulated by Lewis County effective April 27, 2021; and
WHEREAS, this modification and upgrade allows open burning by permit
effective April 27, 2021, at 8:00 A.M. throughout lands regulated by Lewis County;
and
WHEREAS, the burning of debris in city limits and urban growth areas remains
prohibited at all times; and
WHEREAS, previous burn permits expired and were not valid during burn
restrictions, updated burn permits will be required.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the BOCC hereby modifies Resolution
21-166 to allow open burning by permit on all lands regulated by Lewis County,
effective at 8:00 A.M. April 27, 2021, until rescinded by like resolution of the
BOCC.

Lewis County Emergency Burn Restrictions Remain in Effect.
The emergency burn ban will remain in effect until 8:00 A.M. Tuesday April 27,
2021. Note this is beyond the 12:01 A.M.on April 23 time and date previously
reported.This decision is made in cooperation with Washington State Department
of Natural Resources and Clark, Cowlitz, Skamania, Pacific and Wahkiakum
Counties.This restriction shall include all debris burning on lands regulated by
Lewis County.
The current conditions for greater fire hazard remain, however anticipated rain
forecasted for the coming weekend is expected to reduce fire danger potential.
All land clearing, residential and silvicultural burning on lands regulated by Lewis
County will be restricted until the current restrictions have been lifted, EXCEPT for
recreational campfires in designated campgrounds and on private lands, if built in
the following manner are allowed.
• The campfire shall be no greater than 3-feet in diameter and have a ring
constructed of metal,stone or brick 8-inches above surface with a 2-foot
wide area cleared down to exposed soil surrounding the outside of the pit.
• The campfire shall have an area at least 10-feet around it cleared of all
flammable material and at least 20-feet of clearance from overhead
flammable materials or fuels.
• The campfire must be attended at all times by a responsible person at least
16-years old with the ability to extinguish the fire with a shovel and a 5-
gallon bucket of water or with a connected and charged water hose.

• Completely extinguish campfires by pouring water or moist soil in them and
stirring with a shovel until all parts are cool to the touch.The use of self-
contained camp stoves is encouraged as an alternative.
The burning restriction DOES apply to applicants with a current open burning
permit. New burn permits will be available Tuesday,April 27, 2021 at 8:00 A.M.
The emergency burn ban will be remain in place temporarily until the
conditions improve, restrictions will remain in effect until 8:00 A.M., Tuesday,
April 27, 2021. All land clearing, residential and silvicultural burning will be
restricted until further notice.

Lewis County Lifts Restrictions on Outdoor Burning
Effective 8:00 A.M.,Tuesday,April 27, 2021, Lewis County Board of County
Commissioners and Lewis County Fire Marshal will lift the current burn restrictions
on outdoor burning for all unincorporated lands regulated by Lewis County,
Washington.
After careful review of the current and extended weather forecast,the Lewis County
Fire Marshal has determined that current weather conditions within Lewis County
have improved and will lift the restriction to allow outdoor burning, subject to an
open burning application and permit.
Lewis County Fire Marshal works closely with local fire districts and local fire
departments and strongly urges all county residents and property owners to be
attentive to the condition of their properties through proactive fire prevention
measures, such as the presence of fire-extinguishing equipment and attendance to
supervise the fire until the fire has been extinguished.
Remember, outdoor burning is restricted to only natural vegetation from the burn
site.The burning of garbage,paper or other refuse is strictly prohibited at all
times. To obtain an Open Burning Application and Permit,you may apply on-line at
https://burnpermit.lewiscountywa.gov/ or in person at the Lewis County Fire
Marshal's office.
The burning of debris in city limits and urban growth areas is prohibited at all time.
Please refer to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for
restrictions applying to outdoor burning conducted on DNR-protected forestlands
throughout Washington,which includes state parks. You may obtain the
information at www.dnr.wa.gov/burn-restrictions.
