Public Health and Social Services
Salvation Army night-by-night shelter: Meja Handlen said the Salvation Army has been running an
overnight shelter. She said the county is using special funding for the program. Meja noted that the
shelter has been running 13 months at a cost of $464,000, which averages $98 per night, which is on par
with overnight stays at the jail.
Environmental Health succession planning: Erik said Meja is requesting permission for a six-month
position overlap to allow for succession planning and permission to hire a six-month position to work
through a backlog of 300-ish code compliance calls.
Meja said she would like to hire and train Sue Kennedy’s successor as Sue prepares to retire. Meja said
the $49,200 cost would be covered by Foundational Public Health Services dollars.
Meja said the temporary code compliance position would work through backlog of code compliance
calls. She said the cost is estimated at just under $50,000.
Meja noted that the county lost a code compliance position in 2010. She said she would invite the new
manager to attend the Aug. 24 to discuss his plans for future staffing.
Erik said he and Meja would draft a memo regarding the request and would revisit the topic Aug. 24.
