Lewis County Board of County Commissioners February 25, 2019

I would like to address the issue of communication or lack of same with East Lewis County
Residents and businesses during the recent snow event When we lost power, we were
disturbed to note that, not only had we lost power but that telephone service and cellular
phone service were also unavailable Thus, we were unable to contact PUD and report
our outages or to discover how far reaching those outages actually were For the next 24
hours, we remained comfortable with our fireplace blazing away but in wonder about what
was happening in the rest of Lewis County and the world, for that matter Finally, after
being snowbound for 30 hours, I was able to make it in to Packwood to try to find out if
anyone knew anything about what was happening, no one including county road crews,
(who by the way were doing their usual bang up job of keeping county roads passable)
that I talked to knew any more than I did which was nothing
My point in all this is that I felt that Emergency Management and the Sheriff's Office could
or should have made the effort to at least pass information on about what the problem
was In the unlikely event that this should happen again I would hope that a coordinated
effort would be made between the P U D and county government to inform the residents
and businesses of the impacted area of the specific nature of the problem(s) With county
vehicles able to navigate Highway 12, it seems a simple solution to provide knowledge of
the situation would be to post an official notice in local businesses to inform the public
would be the very least that could be done
On another note, it was noted in the Chronicle that a new ordinance has been passed to
charge parcel owners $8 per parcel for noxious weeds While I am all in favor of
controlling noxious weeds and I am not opposed to the tax, I am concerned that we are
creating another level of bureaucracy while doing little to solve the actual problem It
would be good if some /most of the money collected by the county could be used to
actually help the property owners control the problem on their property and not create
new county employee positions because we now have this "cash windfall" $300,000 in
additional revenue could go a long way in helping landowners pay for the treatment of
noxious weeds on their property
