2019-05-07 Meeting regarding the Toledo Senior CenterMeeting regarding the Toledo Senior Center
May 7, 2019
3:10 p.m.
Present: Commissioner Jackson, Commissioner Stamper, Commissioner Fund, Becky Butler, Doug Carey,
Steve Walton, Danette York, Mona Rae Fish, Fred Wilson
Guest: Alex Brown
Recorder: Rieva Lester
Commissioner Jackson said the county is proposing making improvements to the building in the amount
of money the Toledo Senior Center overpaid. He said those improvements could include new,
automated doors.
Commissioner Jackson said the county needs to meet with the Lewis County Seniors Board because the
overarching governing board should be involved. Mona Rae Fish and Fred Wilson said the issues took
place before the nonprofit took over.
Commissioner Jackson said the county views dealing with the centers individually a slippery slope.
Mona Rae said the Lewis County Seniors Board told the Toledo Senior Center that the mishap predated
their involvement and that the Seniors Board attorneys recommended the Toledo Senior Center go to
the commissioners on its own.
Commissioner Fund said she shares the center’s frustration about the process and how long it is taking
to get the situation resolved.
Mona Rae said the county is offering building repairs but that the county already is responsible for
upkeep. She said the center has a door for which the window is at risk of falling out.
Commissioner Jackson said he wants to ensure that other centers don’t work outside the regular
process.
Fred Wilson said he feels the advisory board may say it wants the money, not improvements to the
center.
Danette York said the lack of a written agreement is prompting the county to find other ways in which to
resolve the situation.
Becky Butler reiterated that the county wants to make things right. She said the county just has to make
sure it’s handled in a manner consistent with the requirements of the state Auditor’s Office.
Doug Carey said Facilities will get updated quotes for the doors.
Meeting adjourned at 3:32 pm.
